Friday, June 23, 2006, 7-9 pm The
Friends of African and African American Art (FAAAA) at
the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Fayetteville Museum
of Art and Fayetteville State University have joined to
create a work of art with artist, Keisha Roberts, for
the Women’s Center of Fayetteville. This project,
initiated by the FAAAA, celebrates the life of Janet Lampkin,
a member of the executive committee of Friends who passed
away in November of 2004. The completed work will be permanently
displayed at the Women’s Center of Fayetteville
after a brief display at Fayetteville State University.
Inspired by the Museum’s
Egungun Costume used in
Yoruba celebratory dance that affirms the presence and
power of ancestors, Roberts will lead participants in
weaving memories and memorabilia into a fiber piece
to be given to the Women’s Center. Women of Cumberland
and surrounding counties are invited to participate
in a series of three roundtables, relating to recollections
surrounding womanhood. Everyone is invited and encouraged
to participate in this project to remember and celebrate
Janet Lamkin and the many women who have touched our
lives.
